Post Fire Safety Notice in Apartment Buildings
Post Fire Safety Notice in Apartment Buildings
Who Must Post?
Under the New York City Fire Code and the Rules of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), owners of apartment buildings with three (3) or more dwelling units must post Fire Safety Notices.
This requirement comes from 3 RCNY §401-06 (FDNY Fire Safety Notices rule).
The purpose is simple: make sure all tenants and visitors know what to do in case of fire.
Apartment Door Notice
- A notice must be posted on the inside surface of every apartment entrance door.
- Minimum size: 5.5 × 8.5 inches (half-page format).
- Material:
- Durable metal OR
- Minimum 4 mil (0.004 inch) PVC sticker.
- Always buy from an official store like hpdsigns.nyc to ensure compliance with FDNY standards.
Lobby Fire Safety Notice
- In addition to the apartment door notice, an aluminum fire safety notice sign must be posted in the lobby or common entrance area of the building.
- The lobby sign must be rigid aluminum to ensure durability and visibility.
- The information on the lobby sign must match the fireproof or non-fireproof status of the building.
Two Types of Notices
- Non-Combustible (Fireproof) Building Notice
- Combustible (Non-Fireproof) Building Notice
The correct version must be posted based on the construction type of the building.
Why Two Versions?
- Fireproof buildings – tenants may remain in place if conditions are safe.
- Non-fireproof buildings – tenants must evacuate immediately because fire and smoke can spread quickly.
Using the correct version is critical. Posting the wrong instructions could put lives at risk.
Owner Reminder
- Post on every apartment door (inside), size 5.5 × 8.5 in. minimum.
- Post a durable aluminum sign in the lobby.
- Materials allowed: metal or 4 mil PVC sticker for door signs; aluminum for lobby signs.
- Replace missing or damaged notices immediately.
- Always buy from an official store like hpdsigns.nyc to guarantee FDNY compliance.
