Floor Number signs-Jamb plate signs

Jamb plate signs are mounted on both sides of elevator doors to clearly identify floor numbers and assist with navigation, safety, and emergency response. These small but vital signs are typically installed at eye level on the door frame (jamb) so that occupants, inspectors, and firefighters can immediately see which floor they are on—even if the elevator itself is not in service. In an emergency, having illuminated or photoluminescent jamb plate signs ensures visibility in smoke or power outages, reducing confusion and improving evacuation efficiency.

In many jurisdictions, including FDNY, NFPA, and IBC code requirements, jamb plate signs are required on every floor landing next to elevator entrances. They often display the floor number, level designation (such as B for Basement, PH for Penthouse), and sometimes arrows to identify exit stair locations. Photoluminescent or ADA-compliant versions are used in high-rises to meet life-safety standards. By posting jamb plate signs on both sides of the elevator door frame, property owners guarantee code compliance, assist first responders, and provide clear guidance for all building occupants.
