Legal Requirement
Pursuant to HMC § 27‑2046.1, the owner is required to provide and install one or more approved, operational carbon monoxide detecting devices in each dwelling unit of a Class A multiple dwelling. These detectors must be replaced periodically when they exceed their useful life or become inoperable -

A notice in a form approved by the Commissioner must be posted in a common area of the building, informing residents that installing and periodically replacing CO detectors is a legal obligation -
Additional Owner Responsibilities
Owners must also provide written information to at least one adult occupant per dwelling unit about CO detection — including testing and maintenance procedures, general information on carbon monoxide poisoning, what to do if the alarm goes off, and the owner’s duty to replace the device after its useful life
