Drain signs

Drain signs are an important requirement for fire protection and plumbing systems in buildings. These signs clearly identify drain valves or drain points connected to sprinkler and standpipe systems, ensuring that firefighters, inspectors, and maintenance staff can quickly locate them. During testing, maintenance, or emergencies, proper signage prevents confusion, reduces response time, and ensures the system is operated correctly. For property owners, posting drain signs also demonstrates compliance with FDNY, NFPA, and local building code standards, reducing liability and enhancing overall safety.

A drain in a fire protection system is used to release water from sprinkler or standpipe piping during maintenance, testing, or system repairs. Common examples include “Main Drain” or “Auxiliary Drain” signs, which indicate the specific type of drain and its function. Clearly marking these locations ensures that building staff and first responders know exactly where to go when a system needs to be drained or reset. Durable, visible drain signs are therefore essential for keeping fire protection systems in good working order, ensuring both safety and regulatory compliance.
